You’re Not Starting From Scratch — You’re Building From Experience
Recently, a woman I was talking with told me how much she loved the idea behind The Second Rise™: you’re not starting from scratch — you’re building from experience.
That stayed with me, because when life changes, it can be easy to forget how much we already bring.
Perhaps your children need you differently now. A relationship has ended. Your work no longer feels right. Or you simply know you want something more, without knowing what that might look like.
You can be a capable, experienced woman and still feel unsure about your next step.
A changed role doesn’t erase your value
For years, you may have been the person who organised, supported, solved problems and kept things moving.
When those roles change, you might find yourself asking, “Who am I now?”
But your value hasn’t disappeared because someone needs you in a different way. You still matter to your family, and you matter as a person with your own interests, wishes and possibilities.
You’re allowed to consider what you want this next chapter to hold.
The skills you overlook may be the ones you use every day
Earlier in my life, I found myself managing the office side of our family business. At the beginning, I didn’t even know how to balance a cheque book.
I learned because I had to. Step by step, I worked things out.
Later, while building a fence at home, I remember recognising just how capable I was. Here I was, doing something practical, solving problems and getting on with it — yet in other parts of my life, I questioned myself.
We can become so accustomed to what we do that we stop seeing the skill involved.
Managing a household takes organisation. Supporting someone through a difficult time takes patience and communication. Running a business requires decisions, adaptability and responsibility.
Those abilities don’t disappear when you change direction. They come with you.
I know what it feels like to doubt yourself
There was a time when I questioned my instincts and didn’t trust what I felt about my own situation. Being gaslighted left me hesitating and afraid to move forward.
Eventually, I became tired of staying stuck. I took a step, even though I didn’t have everything worked out.
For me, moving forward helped me begin to see possibilities again.
I also wanted my daughters to know they deserved to be treated as important, and my sons to understand that their partners deserved respect.
My choices mattered to me, and they mattered in what I was showing my children.
That experience is part of the wisdom I bring into my work today.
You don’t need the whole plan to take one useful step
Sometimes we hold ourselves back because we think we should feel completely confident before beginning.
But a next step can be small. It might be a conversation, exploring an interest or making time to think about what matters to you now.
Try writing down your answers to these three questions:
What do people regularly rely on me for?
What have I learned to handle that once felt difficult?
What would I like more room for in my life now?
Look for specific examples. Give yourself credit for what you’ve learned through living, working, caring and adapting.
Your experience won’t answer every question about the future, but it gives you something valuable to build on.
